Symptoms and Cures

Studies have shown that over thirty percent of people in the United States suffer from some type of joint pain.  There are a range of causes and types of joint pain, and their severity ranges from minor to acute to chronic.  There are several ways of combating this debilitating condition, ranging from over the counter medicines and prescriptions to dietary supplementations.  Speaking to one’s physician and keeping regular scheduled check-ups can greatly improve one’s pain level and quality of life.

The first step is to figure out the cause of one’s joint pain.  Some general causes are arthritis, obesity, damaged joints, Lyme disease, and bursitis.  Pain levels can vary, as well as treatment options.  A few are discussed below.

The Dangers of Over The Counter Medications

Over the counter medicines can help to alleviate symptoms of the more minor causes of joint pain and stiffness.  Analgesics such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen are suitable treatments if one’s pain is not debilitating.  One’s doctor can inform him or her as to the best treatment option for his or her pain levels.  Many times, if the pain causes an extreme change in one’s lifestyle, his or her physician may prescribe prescription medications that will help to dull his or her pain.  It should be noted, however, that COX-2 inhibitors should be avoided, as recently these drugs have been shown to have severe side effects regardless of their ability to reduce swelling and inflammation.  COX-2 inhibitors have been linked to stroke and heart attack in patients that have used them for pain treatment.

Enhancing one’s diet with variable supplements, such as chondroitin and glucosamine, has shown promising results without the side effects of some prescription medications.  Calcium supplements are also good, as this has been shown to strengthen bones.  Simple spices such as ginger and turmeric have been shown to have anti-inflammatory results, and it also adds flavor to one’s meals.  If one does not care for the tastes of these, they can be taken in supplement form, which can be found at any natural health food store.
